Discover more about Wasila Historical House

Nestled in the El-Darb El-Ahmar district, the Wasila Historical House stands as a remarkable example of Ottoman residential architecture in Cairo. Constructed in 1646 by brothers Abd El Haq and Lotfy El Kenany, the house was later named after its last resident, Wasila Khatun, a well-regarded servant of the family. The house features a traditional courtyard design with three levels. The ground floor includes the Salamlek hall, once used for receiving guests and hosting celebrations. The intricate details of the house, from its unique entrance designed to ensure privacy to the white marble-adorned bathroom, showcase the architectural splendor of the era. The house also boasts beautiful frescoes, especially in the maq'ad and qa'a. After Wasila's passing, the house fell into disrepair but was meticulously restored between 2002 and 2005 by the Historic Cairo Restoration Project. In 2010, the Ministry of Culture transformed it into the "House of Arabic Poetry," a gathering place for poets and a venue for various cultural events. Today, visitors can explore this cultural shrine and appreciate its rich history and art. The surrounding neighborhood, with its narrow streets and bustling markets, adds to the experience, offering a taste of authentic Egyptian life.
