Crystal Mountain, also known as Gebel el-Izaz, is a unique geological formation in Egypt's Western Desert. Located between the Bahariya and Farafra oases, about 120 km from Farafra, it is more of a ridge than a mountain. The entire structure is composed of calcite crystals, resulting in a shimmering spectacle in the desert landscape.Originally a cave with stalactites and stalagmites, the mountain's roof eroded over time. Some believe a meteorite impact contributed to its formation. The crystals, often clear or cloudy white, sometimes appear in oblong or square shapes. A natural crystal arch is large enough to stand under.Declared a nature reserve in 2008, Crystal Mountain is a highlight of White Desert tours. Visitors can explore the crystal formations and enjoy panoramic desert views. However, it's important to respect the site by not breaking off or removing any crystals. The location also provides a habitat for desert-adapted species and promotes eco-tourism.
