The basilica was constructed between 1847 and 1856 in the Neo-Baroque style, with Franciscan architect Serafino da Baceno at the helm. The Franciscans, who had been in Alexandria since the 17th century, were instrumental in catering to European pilgrims en route to the Holy Land.The cathedral's origins trace back to the 1840s when new convent and school buildings were established. Dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria, a martyr known for her intellect and faith, the church became the cathedral of the Apostolic Vicariate in 1839. The dedication took place on November 24, 1850. In 1927, the facade was redesigned in the Roman Baroque style by Italian architect Mario Avena.Inside, visitors are greeted by stunning stained glass windows, ornate altars, and inspiring artwork, creating a serene atmosphere for prayer and reflection. The cathedral is not only a place of worship but also a historical site; it served as the burial place of exiled Italian King Victor Emmanuel III from 1947 until his remains were repatriated to Italy in 2017.
