Discover more about Nubian Museum

The Nubian Museum, officially the International Museum of Nubia, stands as a cultural beacon in Aswan, Egypt, celebrating the legacy of the Nubian civilization. Opened in November 1997, following UNESCO's International Campaign to Save the Monuments of Nubia, the museum was designed by architect Mahmoud El-Hakim to harmonize with the surrounding landscape of rocks and mountains. The museum's construction cost approximately E£75 million (US$22 million at the time). In 2001, it was awarded the Aga Khan Award for Architecture. The museum is home to over three thousand pieces of Egyptian antiquities, representing various ages, including Geological, Pharaonic, Roman, Coptic, and Islamic periods. The open-air exhibition displays 90 rare monumental pieces, while the internal halls contain 50 invaluable pieces dating back to prehistoric times, 503 pieces from the Pharaonic period, 52 from the Coptic era, 103 from the Islamic age, and 140 from the Nubian era, in addition to 360 pieces reflecting the history of Aswan. Among the notable exhibits is a 20,000-year-old human skeleton discovered in Aswan in 1982.The museum's creation is closely linked to the Aswan High Dam, built in the 1960s, which led to the flooding of many ancient Nubian villages and archaeological sites. The Nubian Museum was established to commemorate and preserve these cultural sites before they were lost forever. The museum also includes a library with books on Nubian history and culture.Visitors can explore exhibits on Nubian history, religion, language, customs, traditions, art, music, and daily life. The museum also showcases traditional Nubian architecture, characterized by sandstone walls, domed roofs and intricate carvings. The museum gardens host more than eighty historical statues and rocks, some belonging to the gods of ancient Nubia, as well as artificial lakes and waterfalls that serve as a demonstration of the Nile River.
