Discover more about Désert blanc

The White Desert, or Désert Blanc, is a mesmerizing national park in the northeast Sahara, about 30 kilometers north of the Farafra Oasis. Established as a protected area in 2002, it spans over 300 square kilometers, characterized by its dazzling white sands and unique rock formations. These formations, sculpted over millennia by wind and erosion, resemble everything from ice cream cones to mushrooms, creating a surreal and unforgettable landscape. Once a seabed around 60 million years ago, the area's chalk formations are composed primarily of calcium carbonate. Over time, the sedimentary rocks formed a 300-meter-deep stratum, which was later broken down as Atlantic waters retreated, giving birth to the White Desert. The desert is also home to diverse wildlife, including the fennec fox, Rüppell's fox, sand cats, and the endangered Rhim gazelle. Visitors can explore the desert via 4x4 tours, camel rides or hiking expeditions. Popular activities include camping under the stars to witness the ethereal glow of the moonlit landscape and photographing the dramatic sunsets. Nearby attractions include the Black Desert with its volcanic rock formations and Crystal Mountain, a ridge of quartz crystals.
