Discover more about Ex Cine Libertad

Ex Cine Libertad is located in the heart of San Salvador's Historic Center. The iconic building is currently undergoing a significant transformation, with plans to convert the beloved theater into a modern, four-level cinema complex. The renovated space will feature state-of-the-art movie theaters, dining areas, a rooftop terrace, a plaza, and an audiovisual arts center. Originally opened in 1967, Cine Libertad was part of a circuit of national cinemas created to provide family entertainment. Over the years, it became a popular destination for residents of nearby neighborhoods. However, the building suffered damage from earthquakes in 1986 and 2001 and, like many older theaters, eventually fell into disuse due to the rise of new technologies and security concerns. Following the renovation, the ground floor will house the main entrance, ticket booths, a café, a lobby, a concession stand, a cinema hall, and an IMAX theater. The second floor will feature more IMAX screens, a workshop classroom, a video archive, and additional amenities. The fourth floor will offer commercial spaces, an outdoor screening area, a food court, and a museum. The rooftop terrace will preserve the theater's historic nameplate.
