5 Days Exploring Northern Ethiopia

We booked a 5-day tour through northern Ethiopia with Danakil Depression Tours, visiting Bahir Dar, Gondar, the Simien Mountains and Lalibela. We knew beforehand that trying to see all these places in five days would make the trip quite busy, but we wanted to see as much as possible during our time in Ethiopia. We started in Bahir Dar and spent time around Lake Tana and the historic sites in the area. It was a nice introduction to the region, and we enjoyed seeing a quieter side of Ethiopia before moving on. From Bahir Dar we continued to Gondar. The old royal compound and historic churches were interesting, and our guide gave us background about the history instead of just taking us from one place to another. We enjoyed having the explanations because otherwise it would have been difficult to understand the importance of some of the sites. The Simien Mountains were probably the biggest surprise of the trip. The scenery is beautiful, with huge valleys and dramatic cliffs. We also saw gelada monkeys, which was something we were really hoping to see. The weather was a little unpredictable while we were there, but it actually made the mountains look even more dramatic at times. Then we headed to Lalibela. Seeing the rock-hewn churches in person was very different from seeing them in pictures. Walking between the churches and seeing how they were carved into the rock was one of the moments that really stayed with us. We also appreciated having a guide who could explain the history and religious significance of the sites. Because we were covering four destinations in only five days, there was quite a lot of driving and some early starts. It was definitely tiring at times, but we expected that when we chose this itinerary. The advantage was that we got to experience several very different parts of northern Ethiopia in one trip. One thing that made the trip easier was Mickey, the owner of Danakil Depression Tours. From the first time we contacted him, he was very fast with his replies. Whenever we had a question, we usually didn't have to wait long for an answer. More importantly, he continued to follow up with us throughout the tour, rather than just arranging everything and leaving us on our own. There were a few small changes and practical things to sort out along the way, as can happen on a busy trip, but it was reassuring knowing that we could contact Mickey and get a quick response. Overall, it was a busy but rewarding five days. Bahir Dar, Gondar, the Simien Mountains and Lalibela each offered something completely different, from Lake Tana and Ethiopian history to mountain landscapes and the incredible churches of Lalibela. A big thank you to Mickey and the team for organizing everything and, especially, for the quick communication and follow-up before and during our trip. That personal attention made a real difference to our experience.

Wonderful Experience in Bahir Dar – Lake Tana & Blue Nile Falls

We had a fantastic experience exploring Bahir Dar, one of Ethiopia’s most beautiful and relaxing destinations. The combination of Lake Tana, its historic island monasteries, and the spectacular Blue Nile Falls made this trip truly unforgettable. Our visit to Lake Tana was peaceful and fascinating. The boat trip across the lake offered beautiful scenery, birdlife, fishing boats, and an opportunity to visit some of the historic monasteries located on the lake’s islands and peninsulas. The ancient religious paintings and traditions gave us a wonderful insight into Ethiopia’s rich history and culture. We also visited the famous Blue Nile Falls, surrounded by beautiful green landscapes and impressive scenery. The walk to the falls was enjoyable, and seeing the water cascading down the cliffs was one of the highlights of our trip. Everything was well organized, from transportation and guiding to the visits and timing. Our guide was friendly, knowledgeable, and always happy to explain the history, culture, and local way of life. Bahir Dar is definitely worth visiting, and we highly recommend combining Lake Tana and the Blue Nile Falls for anyone traveling in Ethiopia. A beautiful destination, great cultural experience, and wonderful memories!
