Car
If you're traveling by car, start your journey from Harar city. Take the main road heading east towards Jijiga. After approximately 46 kilometers, you will reach the town of Jijiga. As you approach Jijiga, look for the signs directing you to 'Karamara Mountain' or the West Gate. The mountain is located near the coordinates 9.3617° N, 42.6949° E, which is just west of Jijiga. You can park your car at the base of the mountain. Ensure to check your vehicle’s fuel prior to departure, as fuel stations may be limited in rural areas.
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, head to the main bus station in Harar. Look for buses heading to Jijiga; these buses are frequent and the fare is typically around 50 Ethiopian Birr. The journey will take approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. Once you arrive in Jijiga, you can either take a local taxi or a bajaj (three-wheeled vehicle) to the West Gate area near Karamara Mountain. The taxi fare should be around 20-30 Ethiopian Birr. Make sure to ask the driver to drop you near the mountain's base.
Walking/Trekking
If you prefer to trek, you can start walking from the West Gate of Jijiga after being dropped off by taxi. The trek to Karamara Mountain is about 5 kilometers and may take around 1-1.5 hours depending on your pace. The terrain can be rugged, so wear appropriate footwear and carry water. Follow the paths leading upwards towards the mountain; local residents can assist with directions if needed.
