Getting There

• Walking

  Start your journey from the center of Mekele, near the main market (Mercato). Head east on Abreha We Atsbeha Street, following the signs toward the university. Continue until you reach the junction with the main road (Aksum Road). Turn right and walk for about 2 kilometers until you reach a bus station. Here, you can ask locals for directions to Abala. Most will direct you to catch a minibus heading towards Abala. The journey to Abala will take about 30 minutes. The bus will drop you off near the entrance to the hiking area for the waterfall. From there, follow the path leading southwest into the hills for approximately 1 kilometer. Keep an eye out for local guides who may offer assistance along the way.

• Public Transport

  From Mekele, make your way to the main bus station located near the center of the city. Look for minibuses that are heading to Abala. Before boarding, confirm with the driver that they will stop at the vicinity of Abala waterfall. The ride takes around 30 to 40 minutes. Once you arrive in Abala, disembark and ask locals for the direction to the waterfall trail. The walk from the drop-off point to the waterfall will take approximately 20-30 minutes. Follow the well-trodden paths and enjoy the scenery along the way.

• Hiking

  If you are feeling adventurous, you can hike directly from Mekele to Abala. Start your hike from the center of Mekele and take the Aksum Road heading east. After about 3 kilometers, you will find a dirt path leading off to the left; this will take you through the hills towards Abala. Ensure you have proper hiking gear and plenty of water. The total hiking distance is about 12 kilometers, and it can take around 3-4 hours depending on your pace. Follow the trail signs and keep an eye out for other hikers who might be heading in the same direction.
