Getting There

  • Public Transport

    From Addis Ababa, take a bus to Robe. From Robe, hire a taxi to Sof Umar Cave, approximately 180 km away. Alternatively, from Jimma, take a bus to Bedele, then a minivan or 'bajaj' (three-wheeled taxi) to Arabatti. Ask locals for directions to the cave, a short distance away. Expect the minivan fare from Bedele to Arabatti to cost around 20-30 Ethiopian Birr. Negotiate the taxi fare from Robe to Sof Umar Cave in advance.

  • Car

    From Jimma, head east on the Jimma to Addis Ababa road (A1) towards Bedele. After approximately 80 km, turn left towards Arabatti (approximately 15 km). Continue to coordinates WR4W+M3G, the location of Sof Omar Cave. The drive from Jimma takes about 2 to 2.5 hours. Alternatively, from Goba, take the road towards Dinsho and follow signs to Bale Mountains National Park. After entering the park, continue for about 40 km until Arabatti. Sof Omar Cave is located just outside Arabatti.

  • Walking

    From Arabatti to Sof Umar Cave is about 4 kilometers. Follow the main trail leading out of Arabatti towards the cave entrance. It should take approximately 1 hour to walk there. Be sure to carry enough water and wear comfortable shoes.
