Founded in the 15th century by Abbot Tsadkan, believed to be a follower of the 5th-century Syrian monk Abba Seyoum, the monastic complex has evolved into an important spiritual and religious site for Ethiopians. The church is renowned for its 15th-century painting of Mary, thought to have been created by Abbot Tsadkan himself. The complex comprises several chapels, including the main structure dedicated to St. Mary and a smaller chapel dedicated to the Archangel Michael. Additional features include two monuments, an ancient bell tower, and a cemetery for monks. Inside, the church's square plan is divided into four primary spaces, creating a cruciform wall at the center. A central column and pilaster further define the space. The prayer chamber, carved into the northeast cliff face, features a rectangular window and two square columns, with niches carved into the walls. The northwest bay, reserved for priests, is covered by curtains. Visitors often find solace in the church's peaceful atmosphere.
