Discover more about Vestmanna

Vestmanna, nestled on the western coast of Streymoy Island in the Faroe Islands, is a village steeped in history and natural beauty. Known historically as Vestmannahavn, meaning "Westmen's harbor," its name reflects the Viking age when Norsemen referred to Gaels from Britain and Ireland as "westmen". Recent Viking discoveries support the theory that Vestmanna was among the earliest settlements in the Faroes. The village is surrounded by mountains such as Hægstafjall, Økslin, Loysingafjall, and Moskurfjall. Vestmanna's primary attraction is undoubtedly the Vestmannabjørgini, a series of towering sea cliffs north of the village. These cliffs, rising up to 500 meters, stretch for 5 kilometers along the coast and teem with birdlife, including puffins, guillemots, fulmars, and kittiwakes. Boat tours departing from Vestmanna harbor provide unparalleled views of the cliffs, sea stacks, and grottos carved by the waves. Beyond its natural wonders, Vestmanna offers a glimpse into Faroese culture and history. The Saga Museum at the Vestmanna Tourist Centre presents the islands' history through lifelike dioramas. Vestmanna also played a role in Faroese energy history, hosting the first attempt to generate hydroelectric power in 1907. Today, it remains an important base for exploring the natural and cultural treasures of the Faroe Islands.
