Discover more about Fjallavatn

Fjallavatn, meaning 'mountain lake', is a freshwater lake tucked away in the rugged landscape of the Faroe Islands. Situated on the island of Vágar, it holds the distinction of being the second-largest lake in the archipelago, covering an area of 1.03 square kilometers. The lake is positioned on the island's north side, approximately 80 meters above sea level, and separated from the Atlantic Ocean by only a small stream. Fjallavatn offers a tranquil escape from the more crowded tourist spots. The hike to the lake itself is part of the experience, leading you through a valley of peaceful fields and offering solitude amidst the natural beauty. Along the lake's edge, you'll find a few scattered cottages, adding a touch of human presence to the otherwise wild terrain. For those seeking a longer trek, a path continues beyond the northernmost point of the lake, leading to the Reipsáfossur Waterfall where the water from Fjallavatn thunders towards the ocean. The area between the lake and the north coast, known as “Norð á Munna,” is a popular hiking spot, especially during the summer solstice when both sunset and sunrise can be witnessed in short succession. Fjallavatn has been a nature conservation area since 1983, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
