Discover more about Gjógv Natural Harbour

Gjógv Natural Harbour is more than just a scenic spot; it's the heart of the village of Gjógv, nestled on the northeastern tip of Eysturoy Island in the Faroe Islands. The village, whose name translates to 'gorge' in Faroese, is defined by a 200-meter-long sea-filled gorge that has served as a natural harbor for centuries. Historically, Gjógv thrived on fishing, with the harbor providing a safe haven for boats. Today, while fishing remains important, tourism has become a vital part of the local economy. Visitors are drawn to the village's picturesque setting, characterized by colorful houses, the iconic gorge, and the surrounding dramatic landscape. The village offers several sights, including the Gjógv Church, consecrated in 1929 as the first in the Faroes to hold services in Faroese. A sculpture across from the church serves as a memorial to fishermen lost at sea. Visitors can also enjoy hiking trails with stunning views, including the Ambadalur Trail. During the summer months, puffins can be spotted near the gorge.
