Discover more about Svartafoss Waterfall

Svartafoss Waterfall, whose name translates to 'Black Waterfall' in Faroese, is a captivating natural attraction situated a mere 2 kilometers north of Tórshavn's old town. Nestled in Hoydalsá valley, the waterfall flows through Hoydalar, once marking the boundary between Tórshavn and Hoyvík. Svartafoss is especially stunning after periods of rain, when the water flow is at its most impressive. However, during drier summer months, the waterfall may reduce to a trickle, revealing the black stone wall behind it, which gives the waterfall its name. Historical photos suggest the waterfall's appearance has remained largely unchanged over the decades. Historically, residents of Tórshavn frequented the area to collect sod for their fireplaces, and Sunday walks to enjoy the scenery were common. An old sheepfold near the waterfall serves as a reminder of the area's past agricultural use. Today, Svartafoss lies within Tórshavn's city limits, and the local council has designated the area around the waterfall and Hoydalsá as a protected area, with trails built to enhance accessibility. Svartafoss offers a serene escape and a chance to connect with the natural beauty of the Faroe Islands.
