Discover more about Skansin

Skansin, perched on a hill overlooking Tórshavn's harbor, is a historic fortress that has guarded the Faroe Islands for centuries. Constructed in 1580 by Magnus Heinason, a Faroese adventurer, it was built to protect the trading center of Tórshavn from pirate raids. The original fortification was destroyed in 1677 by French pirates after the town failed to meet their demands. Rebuilt and expanded in 1780, Skansin has witnessed many changes. During World War II, the fort served as a British military base after the British occupation of the Faroe Islands in 1940. Today, two 5.5-inch guns from the British occupation stand alongside older Danish cannons. Visitors can explore the well-preserved stone walls, barracks, and cannons, while enjoying exceptional views over the sea to the neighboring island of Nólsoy. The iconic Skansin Lighthouse towers over the fortress, guiding sailors to the capital. The grassy lawn offers a spot for a picnic while soaking in the coastal views. Skansin is open 24/7 and is free to enter.
