Discover more about The Nordic House

The Nordic House (Norðurlandahúsið) in Tórshavn is more than just a building; it's a cultural institution that serves as a vital link between the Faroe Islands and the rest of the Nordic region. Established to promote both Faroese and Nordic culture, the house hosts over 400 events annually, ranging from children's festivals to art exhibitions and concerts. The building itself is an architectural marvel, designed by Norwegian architect Ola Steen and Icelandic architect Kolbrún Ragnarsdóttir, who won a Nordic competition in 1977. Opened in 1983, its design incorporates elements from all Nordic countries: Norwegian slate floors, Swedish pine wood, Danish ash ceilings, and Finnish birch furnishings. The roof, built in the Icelandic style and covered with Faroese turf, gives the Nordic House the appearance of an enchanting hill of elves, blending seamlessly with the Faroese landscape. Inside, the Nordic House offers a multi-functional main hall that can accommodate up to 380 seated guests. Klingran, a transparent amphitheater-style room, can host 150 guests or be combined with the main hall for larger events. The conference section, Athøll, features state-of-the-art audio-visual technology. The Nordic House also includes a café serving traditional Faroese dishes and a selection of Nordic newspapers. The Nordic House is run by a steering committee with members from both the Faroe Islands and other Nordic countries, ensuring its role as a key player in Nordic cultural cooperation. It stands as a testament to the strong cultural ties between the Faroe Islands and the Nordic region, offering a space for artistic expression, cultural exchange, and community engagement.
