Kongaminnið, or the King's Memorial, is a basalt obelisk erected in 1882 to commemorate the first visit of a Danish monarch, King Christian IX, to the Faroe Islands in 1874. Situated in Tórshavn, it offers visitors a scenic viewpoint and a moment to reflect on Faroese history.

Walking
From the city center of Tórshavn, Kongaminnið is approximately a 30-minute walk. Head north towards Hoyvíksvegur. The route offers scenic views of the area. Follow the signs or use a map app to guide you to the coordinates 266J+R7M. There are no costs associated with walking.
Public Transport
The red city buses in Tórshavn, operated by Bussleiðin, provide a convenient and free way to reach Kongaminnið. Several routes criss-cross the city, with connections at Steinatún square and Á Hálsi. Check the current bus routes and timetables online or via the Sona app for real-time tracking. As of July 2025, the city buses are free.
Driving
If driving, you can leave your car at your hotel or park in the city. Parking in Tórshavn is free, but time limits apply in the city center. Observe the blue parking signs indicating the maximum parking time. Some parking lots offer 8-hour parking. A parking disc is often required to indicate your arrival time. Be aware that exceeding the time limit can result in a fine. There are no parking fees.
