Discover more about The National Gallery of The Faroe Islands

The National Gallery of the Faroe Islands, known locally as Listasavn Føroya, is a must-visit cultural institution located in Tórshavn. Established in 1989, the gallery's mission is to preserve, research, and mediate Faroese art as a vital part of the nation's heritage. The gallery's collection began with donations from the Faroe Islands Art Association and the Parliament. During World War II, when ties with Denmark were severed, Faroese students in Copenhagen founded the Art Association to ensure Faroese art would be preserved. This collection merged with the Parliament's collection in 1989, forming the basis of the National Gallery. Housed in a building designed to evoke traditional Faroese boathouses, the gallery's architecture is as unique as the art it contains. Inside, visitors can explore a diverse collection of paintings, sculptures, installations, and textiles, reflecting the unique landscapes, culture, and history of the Faroe Islands. The collection includes works dating back to the 1830s, with a strong representation of major Faroese artists and contemporary pieces. Beyond its permanent collection, the National Gallery hosts dynamic exhibitions, workshops, and cultural events throughout the year. The gallery also features a cozy café where visitors can relax and enjoy local delicacies while reflecting on their artistic journey. The National Gallery is more than just a museum; it's a cultural cornerstone that enriches the understanding of the Faroe Islands' artistic expression and community spirit.
