Discover more about Svartafoss Waterfall

Svartafossur, or 'Black Waterfall', is a captivating natural attraction nestled in Hoydalsá, a mere 2 kilometers north of Tórshavn's historic center. This easily accessible waterfall flows through Hoydalar, once marking the boundary between Tórshavn and Hoyvík. The name 'Black Waterfall' comes from the appearance of the stone wall behind it during the summer when the water flow is reduced, revealing the dark basalt columns. In earlier times, locals gathered sod in this area for their fireplaces, and Sunday strolls to enjoy the scenery were common. An old sheepfold near the waterfall serves as a reminder of the area's agricultural past. Today, Svartafossur is protected by the city council, ensuring the preservation of its natural beauty. The waterfall is particularly impressive after rainfall, but even in drier months, it retains its charm. Trails around the area make it easy to explore the scenic landscape.
