Føroya Sjósavn: Discover Faroese Marine Life

Føroya Sjósavn, or the Faroese Aquarium, is a window into the underwater world of the Faroe Islands. Situated in the village of Argir, near Tórshavn, the aquarium is home to a variety of aquatic species native to the region. Founded in 2006, Føroya Sjósavn aims to educate visitors about the importance of marine conservation and the delicate balance of ocean ecosystems. The aquarium features local fish, fascinating invertebrates, and captivating displays that highlight the relationships within marine environments. The aquarium is housed in a building with a history, incorporating the old 'Ice House' used a century ago for collecting ice for fishing boats. Relics from a dam used to collect ice in winter can still be seen outside. The facility includes the old ice house, a concrete extension, and a wooden extension, with the ice house and concrete building serving as exhibition rooms. Føroya Sjósavn plays a vital role in educating children and adults about the marine environment. The aquarium has plans to expand into a state-of-the-art Arctic Oceanarium by 2028, which will include larger aquariums, a café, and educational spaces.
