Overview

Skarðsbygd, nestled on the east coast of Kunoy, presents a serene yet evocative experience for travelers. The name Skarðsbygd translates to "mountain pass village". The village's story is one of hardship and resilience. On December 23, 1913, a devastating storm led to the loss of seven men from Skarðsbygd while they were out fishing. This catastrophic event decimated the village's male population, leading to its abandonment as the surviving women and children sought new homes in Haraldssund.Today, visitors can explore the remains of Skarðsbygd, where the ruins of old houses whisper tales of a bygone era. The village is accessible via two footpaths: a coastal route from Haraldssund and a challenging mountain trail over Skarðsgjógv from Kunoy village. The coastal path offers stunning views of the sea and surrounding cliffs, while the mountain trail, reaching an elevation of 600 meters, is recommended only for experienced hikers with a guide.Kunoy itself is the highest island in the Faroes, characterized by steep mountains and dramatic valleys. The island is also unique for having one of the few forests in the Faroe Islands, adding to its natural appeal. Visiting Skarðsbygd offers a chance to connect with the raw beauty of the Faroese landscape and reflect on the lives of those who once called this remote village home.
