Discover more about Gjógv

Gjógv, pronounced "Gjógv" (literally gorge), is a captivating village on the northeastern tip of Eysturoy Island in the Faroe Islands. Approximately 63 km north of Tórshavn, the capital, Gjógv is named for its dramatic 200-meter-long sea-filled gorge, which has served as a natural harbor for centuries. First mentioned in 1584, Gjógv has a rich history rooted in fishing and sheep farming. The village's population peaked around 1945 with 286 residents but has since declined to a mere 19. Despite its small size, Gjógv offers essential services, including a café, public toilet, and parking. The village church, dating back to 1929, was the first in the Faroes to conduct services in Faroese. A sculpture across from the church serves as a memorial to fishermen lost at sea, a poignant reminder of the village's maritime past. Visitors can explore the gorge, visit 'Mary's Bench' which offers scenic views, and hike in the surrounding mountains.
