Discover more about Vestmanna

Vestmanna, nestled on the west coast of Streymoy Island in the Faroe Islands, is a village steeped in history and natural beauty. Once a vital ferry port, it now serves as a gateway to the awe-inspiring Vestmannabjørgini, the sea cliffs north of the village. These cliffs, stretching for 5 kilometers, are home to thousands of seabirds, including puffins, guillemots, and fulmars, making it a paradise for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. The village's name, Vestmanna, meaning "Westmen's harbor," hints at its early settlers, believed to be Irish monks who arrived over 1000 years ago. Recent Viking remains discoveries further support the theory that Vestmanna was among the first places settled in the Faroes. Boat tours to the Vestmanna Sea Cliffs are the main draw, departing from the harbor from April to October. These tours take you up close to the towering cliffs, into narrow grottos carved by the waves, and past impressive sea stacks. Weather permitting, boats navigate into natural caves, offering a unique perspective on the dramatic coastline. Beyond the cliffs, Vestmanna offers other attractions, including the Saga Museum, which depicts the history of the Faroe Islands through wax figures. The surrounding mountains, such as Hægstafjall and Økslin, provide a stunning backdrop and opportunities for hiking. Vestmanna also has one of the earliest hydro power plants in the Faroes, with rainwater collected in dams in the mountains.
