Overview
The Eysturoy Tunnel is more than just a transportation route; it's an experience. Opened in December 2020, this 11.2-kilometer undersea tunnel links Streymoy, where the capital Tórshavn is located, with Eysturoy, the second most populated island in the Faroe Islands. What sets it apart is the world's first underwater roundabout, situated 72 meters below the surface. The tunnel dramatically reduces travel time between Tórshavn and Runavík/Strendur from 55 km to just 17 km, shortening the drive from 64 minutes to a mere 16 minutes. The tunnel also halves the journey between Tórshavn and Klaksvík, from 70 minutes to around 35 minutes. The underwater roundabout is decorated with a sculpture by Faroese artist Tróndur Patursson, featuring color-changing lights and steel shaped to represent people in a traditional Faroese chain dance. Motorists can also tune their radios to 97.0 FM to enjoy music composed specifically for the tunnel. The construction of the Eysturoy Tunnel was a massive undertaking, costing around 260 million Euros and is the largest single investment ever made in the Faroe Islands.
