Discover more about Skansin

Skansin Fortress, perched on a hill overlooking Tórshavn's harbor, is a landmark steeped in history and offering stunning views. Constructed in 1580 by Magnus Heinason, this fort was originally built to protect the trading center of Tórshavn from pirate raids that plagued the North Atlantic.Over the centuries, Skansin has been expanded and rebuilt, playing a vital role in defending Tórshavn. In 1677, French pirates destroyed the original fort after the townspeople failed to meet their demands for ransom. The fortress also served as a British military base during World War II, after the British occupation of the Faroe Islands in April 1940. The two 5.5-inch guns at the fort date back to this period.Today, Skansin is open to the public and offers exceptional views of the sea and the neighboring island of Nólsoy. Visitors can explore the grounds, see the cannons (including older brass cannons from the time of the Danish Trade Monopoly), and visit the lighthouse. The grassy lawn makes it a great spot for a picnic.
