Discover more about Momi Battery Historical Park

The Momi Battery Historical Park, located on the western side of Viti Levu, offers a glimpse into Fiji's strategic importance during World War II. Constructed in the early 1940s, the battery was one of six built to defend Fiji against potential Japanese invasion. The site overlooks the Navula Passage, a key entry point through the surrounding reef. Visitors can explore the well-maintained park, observing the two restored 7-meter-long guns and associated structures, including the fire control building, armory, and command post. The visitor information center provides historical context, detailing the events that led to Fiji's involvement in the war. Informative displays illustrate the daily lives of the soldiers stationed here and the broader significance of Fiji during the war. The construction of the Momi Battery began in 1940, with soldiers from the Fiji Defence Force, the Fiji Public Works Department, and locals assisting. New Zealand and United States Army soldiers later joined in the construction and training of Fijian gunners. Although the guns were only fired a couple of times, the Momi Battery played a crucial role in protecting the island. Today, the park stands as a testament to the resilience and bravery of the Fijian people.
