Momi Battery Historical Park: Fiji's WWII Coastal Defense

Momi Battery Historical Park, located on the western side of Viti Levu near Denarau Island, offers a glimpse into Fiji's strategic role during World War II. Built in 1940 by the New Zealand Army, the battery was one of six coastal defense sites designed to protect Fiji from potential Japanese invasion. The park overlooks the Navula Passage, a critical entry point through the surrounding reef.Visitors can explore the well-maintained grounds, observing the restored 7-meter-long guns and associated structures. These include the fire control building, armory, command post, and range-finder. Informative panels detail the history of the site, Fiji's involvement in the war, and the people who served there. The Visitor Information Centre provides additional context and insights.The guns at Momi Battery were capable of firing 45-kilogram shells over 14 kilometers. Although the battery saw limited action, it played a vital role in protecting the strategically important airstrips at Nadi and the port of Lautoka. In February 1944, the battery was closed following the retreat of Japanese forces from the Pacific. The site was restored and opened to the public in 2017 by the National Trust of Fiji.Today, the park offers stunning views of the Malolo Barrier Reef and the Mamanuca Islands. Visitors can take a 10-15 minute walk around the park, observing the guns and associated structures. The park is open daily and arrangements can be made to visit outside of opening hours for an additional fee.
