Discover more about Lauhanvuori National Park

Lauhanvuori National Park, established in 1982, protects a distinctive area where geological history and natural beauty converge. Rising 231 meters above sea level, Lauhanvuori Hill is one of the highest points in Western Finland, offering panoramic views that stretch to the Gulf of Bothnia. The park's landscape tells a story of dramatic geological change. Once an island in the Ancylus Lake after the Ice Age, Lauhanvuori's summit boasts lush vegetation, a stark contrast to the barren, washed hillsides below. Visitors can explore ancient shorelines, boulder fields, and unique stone deposits, remnants of a time when the area was shaped by glacial forces. The park is part of the Lauhanvuori-Hämeenkangas UNESCO Global Geopark, highlighting its significant geological heritage. The park's diverse ecosystems support a variety of flora and fauna. Rugged pine forests, clear springs and brooks, and bogs create habitats for species like moose, hare, and various bird species. Lucky visitors might spot otters, lynxes, or even wolverines. The park is also a reintroduction site for the Finnish forest reindeer. Visitors can explore the park through a network of hiking trails, ranging from easy nature walks to longer treks. The most popular destination is the viewing tower on top of Lauhanvuori Hill. Other attractions include the Kivijata stone field, Aumakivi rock, and Lake Spitaalijärvi. In winter, the park transforms into a cross-country skiing destination.
