Discover more about Carlsro

Carlsro, located on the shores of Lake Storträsket, serves as Kristinestad's town museum. This charming house, originally built in 1896 as a summer villa for Carl Alfred Carlström, a commercial counselor and ship-owner, provides an engaging glimpse into the past. In the late 19th century, Kristinestad's high society constructed stately summer villas along the banks of Storträsk, living a life of leisure. Carlsro, like other villas named after the gentry's aspirations, experienced both prosperity and hardship. Carlström faced bankruptcy in 1910, leading to an auction of the villa and its contents the following year. Carlsro then transitioned into a summer hotel, changing ownership several times until it closed in 1945. Åke Weckström, a local collector, purchased the unoccupied villa in the early 1960s, with the vision of establishing a museum to protect the building and display his extensive collection of artifacts from the Kristinestad region. The museum boasts around 11,000 objects from the 17th to the 20th centuries, reflecting the history of Kristinestad and its inhabitants. Preserved entities like the goldsmith's workshop and pharmacy are exhibited within the villa's original salons and bedrooms. The rooms feature art nouveau furniture and antique faience and porcelain tile stoves. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved rooms, enjoy the exquisite park, and immerse themselves in the local history and culture.
