Syöte National Park, established in 2000, protects a diverse landscape of forests, mires and fells in the Northern Ostrobothnia and Lapland regions of Finland. The park spans 299 square kilometers and is known for its old-growth forests, which include high-altitude spruce forests, and its extensive mires, which cover a quarter of its area. The park's landscape is defined by its wooded hills and diverse natural features. Visitors can explore over 100 km of well-marked hiking trails that cater to various skill levels. These trails lead to open wilderness huts and lean-to shelters, offering overnight accommodations for longer treks. In winter, the park transforms into a snowy wonderland with over 100 km of prepared ski tracks. Mountain biking is also popular, with routes starting at the Syöte Visitor Centre. The park is named after Iso-Syöte, considered the southernmost fell in Lapland. The word 'syöte' is believed to originate from the Sámi language, possibly meaning 'sacred place'. Historically, the area has been influenced by reindeer husbandry, forestry, and slash-and-burn agriculture, traces of which can still be observed. Today, Syöte National Park serves as a vital nature conservation area and a popular destination for hiking, skiing, and nature observation.
