Bengtskär Lighthouse: A Beacon of History and Archipelago Beauty

Bengtskär Lighthouse, located 25 kilometers southwest of Hanko, marks the southernmost inhabited island in Finland. Constructed in 1906, this imposing structure has guided seafarers through the treacherous waters of the Archipelago Sea for over a century. The lighthouse is not only a navigational aid but also a historical landmark, having played a significant role during wartime. The lighthouse's construction was prompted by numerous shipwrecks in the area, most notably the grounding of the steamer Helsingfors in 1905. Built in just nine months, the lighthouse was made using granite quarried directly from the island. It originally housed a large number of people, including the keepers and their families, reaching a peak of 32 residents in the late 1930s. Bengtskär's history is filled with dramatic events. It was attacked during World War I and was the site of the Battle of Bengtskär in World War II when Soviet forces attempted to destroy it. The lighthouse suffered considerable damage, but it withstood the attacks and remains a symbol of Finnish resilience. Today, Bengtskär is a popular tourist destination, attracting around 13,000 to 15,000 visitors annually. Visitors can explore the lighthouse museum, which showcases the life of lighthouse keepers and the history of the Battle of Bengtskär. The lighthouse also features a chapel, a café, and even hotel rooms for overnight stays. Climbing the 252 steps to the top of the lighthouse offers unparalleled views of the Archipelago Sea.
