Museum Ship Pommern: A Voyage Through Time

The Museum Ship Pommern, a prominent symbol of Mariehamn, stands as a testament to the golden age of sailing. Built in Scotland in 1903, this four-masted barque is the only cargo sailing ship of its kind that remains in its original condition. Originally named Mneme, it was later acquired by Åland shipowner Gustaf Erikson in 1923 and renamed Pommern. For decades, the Pommern transported cargo across the oceans, primarily wheat from Australia to Europe. The ship's robust design allowed it to brave some of the wildest seas on the planet, completing the voyage in under 100 days on multiple occasions. In 1939, the Pommern completed its last commercial voyage, and in 1952, it was donated to the town of Mariehamn to serve as a museum ship. Today, visitors can explore the decks and interiors of the Pommern, immersing themselves in the stories of the ship's journeys and crew. Exhibits showcase the challenges, triumphs, and routines of life at sea, with interactive displays that allow visitors to experience navigation and harsh weather conditions. The 'Pommern Experience' combines storytelling, soundscapes, and visual effects to bring the ship's history to life. An audio guide, included with the ticket, enhances the experience with captivating tales of sailing the world. For children, there is a separate audio guide where Ruby the ship's rat tells about life on board and other secrets. The ship is moored next to the Åland Maritime Museum, allowing visitors to combine their visit for a comprehensive exploration of maritime history.
