Completed in 1879 and named in honor of Tsar Alexander II, the theatre was initially built to serve the Russian community in Helsinki, offering a stage for performances from St. Petersburg and other Russian provinces. The initiative was spearheaded by General Governor Nikolai Adlerberg, a known patron of the arts. The building's architecture, designed by Colonel Pjotr Petrovitš Benard, combines Russian and Finnish influences, while the interior boasts lavish decorations in the Louis XVI style. The auditorium features intricate relief work and a ceiling painting by Severin Falkman, depicting twelve cupids reminiscent of the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg. After Finland's independence, the theatre housed the Finnish National Opera from 1911 until 1993, when the opera moved to a new building. Aleksanterin Teatteri then reclaimed its original name and transitioned into a venue for visiting performances, including opera, ballet, circus, drama, and comedy.
