Discover more about Finnish Museum of Natural History

The Finnish Museum of Natural History, located in the heart of Helsinki, offers visitors a captivating journey through the natural world. As a research institution under the University of Helsinki, the museum is responsible for maintaining Finland's national collections of botanical, zoological, geological, and paleontological specimens. The museum's exhibits showcase the diversity of nature, from the unique ecosystems of Finland to the history of life on Earth. Visitors can explore the "Finnish Nature" exhibition, which takes them on a journey through Finland's distinct seasons and landscapes, from the southern coast to Lapland. The "History of Life" exhibition presents the evolution of life from the Big Bang to the dinosaurs and Ice Age mammals. Other permanent exhibitions include "World Nature", "Story of the Bones", and "Change in the Air". The museum building itself has an interesting history. Built in 1913 for the Alexander Lyceum, a Russian-speaking cadet school, its architecture is unusually flamboyant, especially the main stairs. After Finland gained independence in 1918, the building became a Finnish cadet school before being acquired by the University of Helsinki in 1923 and converted into a zoological museum. In addition to the museum's exhibitions, visitors can also explore the Kaisaniemi and Kumpula Botanic Gardens, which are part of the Finnish Museum of Natural History. The Kaisaniemi Botanic Garden features a variety of plant collections and glasshouses showcasing plant life from around the world. The Kumpula Botanic Garden includes geological collections with minerals, rocks, and fossils.
