Discover more about Finnish National Opera and Ballet

The Finnish National Opera and Ballet is a cultural cornerstone in Helsinki, offering a rich program of opera and ballet performances. The institution traces its roots back to 1873, with the founding of the Finnish Opera by Kaarlo Bergbom, which showcased that opera could be sung in Finnish. After facing financial difficulties, it was re-established in 1911 as the Domestic Opera by Aino Ackté and Edvard Fazer, later becoming the Finnish National Opera. The current Opera House, inaugurated in 1993, provides a state-of-the-art venue for these performances, replacing the Alexander Theater which served as the opera's home since 1918. Designed by Finnish architects Eero Hyvämäki, Jukka Karhunen, and Risto Parkkinen, the building features sleek lines, glass surfaces, and a commitment to sustainability. The main auditorium seats 1,350, while a smaller studio auditorium accommodates 300-500. The Opera employs approximately 550 people from over 30 countries, including soloists, a choir, orchestra musicians and ballet dancers. Each year, the company stages four opera premieres and three ballet premieres, alongside revivals of classic productions. Performances are generally sung in their original languages, with surtitles in Finnish, Swedish, and English.
