Discover more about Helsinki Winter Garden

The Helsinki Winter Garden, or Talvipuutarha in Finnish, is a delightful escape into a lush, green world, located just north of Töölönlahti Bay. Established in 1893, it has served as a recreational meeting place for locals and tourists alike for over a century. Funded by Jakob Julius af Lindfors and designed by Gustaf Nyström, the Winter Garden was inspired by London's Crystal Palace and was one of Helsinki's first continental attractions. The garden is housed in a beautiful 19th-century climate-controlled greenhouse that keeps the plants nice and toasty during Helsinki's cold winters. Inside, visitors can explore three distinct areas: the Palm Room, the Cactus Room, and the Western Wing. Each room boasts a unique collection of plants, from towering palms to prickly cacti and vibrant seasonal flowers. The oldest plant is a camellia tree that is over 130 years old. Outside, the Winter Garden features a seasonal rose garden that bursts into color during the summer and autumn months. At Christmas time, the Winter Garden is decorated with traditional Christmas flowers and Santa's elves. At Easter, the garden is decorated with Easter chicks. The Winter Garden, the Rose Garden in front of it and the plant production area behind the Winter Garden together form the City Garden. The romantic fresco on the back wall of the central hall was painted by Salomo Wuorio.
