Discover more about Helsingin Kaupunginteatteri

Helsingin Kaupunginteatteri, located on the shore of Eläintarhanlahti, is a cornerstone of Helsinki's cultural scene. The theatre's history is rooted in the merger of two earlier organizations, the Helsinki Workers' Theatre (founded in 1902) and the Helsinki National Theatre (founded in 1933). These merged in 1948, eventually becoming the Helsinki City Theatre. The current theatre building opened in 1967, designed by architect Timo Penttilä. The theatre has five stages: the Main Stage, Small Stage, Arena Stage, Studio Pasila, and Lilla Teatern, offering a wide variety of performances. The Helsinki Dance Company, founded in 1973, is also connected with the theatre. Each year, the theatre presents over 30 productions, with approximately 20 premieres and over 800 performances, attracting around 300,000 visitors. The repertoire includes both domestic and foreign dramas, comedies, musicals, children's plays, and plays in Swedish at Lilla Teatern. Helsingin Kaupunginteatteri is committed to providing exceptional artistic experiences, with all musicals on the Big Stage subtitled in English and Swedish.
