Discover more about Hvitträsk

Hvitträsk, completed in 1903, stands as a unique testament to Finnish National Romantic architecture. Located in Kirkkonummi, about 30 kilometers west of Helsinki, this mansion complex was designed by architects Herman Gesellius, Armas Lindgren, and Eliel Saarinen as their studio home. The trio, captivated by the scenery of Lake Vitträsk, built a studio home in the National Romantic style using logs and natural stone. Hvitträsk served as both a shared studio and a home for the architects and their families. It became a hub for the Finnish cultural elite, hosting esteemed figures such as Jean Sibelius and Gustav Mahler. The complex includes a main building, a studio, and separate living quarters, all arranged around a central courtyard. The interiors and furniture were meticulously designed as part of the overall architectural scheme. Today, the former Saarinen residence operates as a museum, offering visitors a glimpse into the lives and work of these influential architects. Visitors can explore the meticulously restored home, admire the Liekki tapestry designed by Akseli Gallen-Kallela, and stroll through the English-style garden. The museum also hosts exhibitions, concerts, and guided tours in multiple languages, providing insights into the history and architecture of Hvitträsk. Although a fire damaged the northern wing in 1922, it was later redesigned by Eliel Saarinen's son, Eero Saarinen.
