4.5

Porvoo Cathedral, or Porvoon Tuomiokirkko, is a captivating landmark in the heart of Porvoo, Finland. This Evangelical Lutheran church, with origins tracing back to the 13th century, showcases a compelling blend of Gothic and Neoclassical architectural styles. The cathedral is dedicated to Mary, the mother of Jesus. Originally constructed as a wooden church, the first stone walls were erected between 1410 and 1420. The church was expanded in the mid-15th century, adopting a construction method introduced by the "Master of Pernå," a church builder believed to be of North German origin. The interior features wall paintings from the late 15th century and a pulpit crafted in 1764. Throughout its history, Porvoo Cathedral has endured numerous fires and reconstructions. It was destroyed in 1508 by Danish forces, and in 1571, 1590, and 1708 by Russian forces. In 2006, an arson attack caused the outer roof to collapse, but the inner ceiling and interiors remained intact. The cathedral has been carefully restored, preserving its historical character. Porvoo Cathedral holds significance as the site of the first Diet of Finland in 1809, where Finland was declared an autonomous Grand Duchy under the Russian Emperor. Today, the cathedral can accommodate 750 people and is used for services, concerts, and guided tours. Services are held in Finnish at 10 am and in Swedish at 12 noon on Sundays.
