    Located at the eastern end of Raate Road in Suomussalmi, the Raate Frontier Guard Museum provides a unique insight into the lives of Finnish border guards before and during the Winter War. The museum is housed in the only pre-World War II guardhouse that remains in Finland, restored to its 1939 appearance. Visitors can explore exhibits detailing the routines and challenges faced by the frontier guards, gaining an understanding of their role in safeguarding Finland's eastern border. The museum also sheds light on the impact of the Winter War on the guards and the local community. Displays include military uniforms, weaponry and personal stories, offering a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made for peace and freedom. The surrounding area features outdoor installations, including a memorial site honoring fallen heroes. The building has served soldiers under three different domains: Finnish, Russian during the Winter War, and German during the Continuation War. The museum first opened on June 3, 1988, and attracts around 6,000 visitors annually. It is maintained by the Kainuu Border Guard District, the Suomussalmi division of the Border Guard Guild of Kainuu, and the municipality of Suomussalmi.
