    To reach Iivaara by car, start from Kuusamo and drive south on Route 5 (E63). After approximately 31 km, look for signs for Iivaara and turn onto Hiltusentie Road. Continue on Hiltusentie Road and turn onto Suokannanvaarantie Road. Drive until a forest road diverges to the right, leading to the parking area. Note that during winter, road conditions may be challenging.

    To get to Iivaara using public transport, take a bus from Kuusamo to Oulanka National Park. Buses depart from Kuusamo bus station. From the Oulanka National Park Visitor Centre, hike approximately 8 km to Iivaara, following marked trails. Bus tickets can be purchased from the driver or via the Väntti mobile app. A single bus fare from Kuusamo to Oulanka National Park typically costs around €5-€10.

Iivaara, located in southern Kuusamo, is a nature reserve comprised of two hilly sections, Iivaara-Penikkavaara and Laihanvaara-Jousivaara, alongside herb-rich forests and mires. Iivaara has long been a destination for hunting and fishing. The hill forests are rich with decaying wood, making it a haven for bird enthusiasts. The highest point of Iivaara is about 470 meters, offering panoramic views of Kuusamo's landscapes and lakes. The name Iivaara means "dark fell," reflecting its mystical atmosphere. The Iirinki hiking trail, approximately 10.3 kilometers long, takes you to the top of Iivaara, showcasing the diverse wooden hill landscapes. The southern slopes feature pine heaths, while the northern slopes are covered with spruce forests. In midsummer, Iivaara is ideal for midnight hiking, offering views of the midnight sun. The area's unique lime-rich soil supports lush vegetation. Iivaara is also known for its special stone, iolite, found nowhere else in Finland.
