Discover more about Iivaara

Iivaara Nature Reserve, situated in southern Kuusamo, comprises two hilly sections: Iivaara-Penikkavaara and Laihanvaara-Jousivaara, along with adjacent herb-rich forests and mire reserves. The Virmajoki flood meadow, a significant traditional landscape site, adjoins the Laihanvaara area. Iivaara has long been a destination for hunting and fishing. The hill forests are rich in decaying wood, making it popular with bird enthusiasts. Iivaara Hill offers splendid views over the surrounding Kuusamo area. The area showcases the entire lifespan of forests, from seedlings to decaying old trees. Lush herb-rich forests and sparkling springs brighten the landscape in depressions. The altitude creates fell-like conditions that provide shelter for demanding species in the summit areas. Iivaara is covered by mixed forests dominated by pines and spruces. The fertile mires host endangered yellow marsh saxifrage, while the springs and herb-rich forests host a diverse array of species. Alpine bearberry and Alpine clubmoss are among the fell species found at the top of Iivaara. Calypso and baneberry, both rarities of lime-rich soil areas, also grow here. Visitors can explore the Iirinki hiking trail. In the past, people gathered on top of Iivaara to watch the midsummer sun and admire the scenery. The nearest parking area is on Hiltusentie road, marking the northern starting point of the Iivaara trail. The distance from the parking area to the top of Iivaara is 3.5km, and to the open wilderness hut in Näätälampi, 5.2km.
