Born in Sääminki, Ranin began his career trading rural products like butter and tar, which he shipped to Viipuri and St. Petersburg in exchange for goods needed in the countryside. In 1852, he established his own trading house, which expanded into various industries, including mills, distilleries, and breweries. His brewery produced popular beers like Mestari, Rautakoura, and Puijo. Ranin was also a shipowner, with vessels such as Aino and Wipunen sailing under his flag. The memorial serves as a reminder of Ranin's contributions to Kuopio's industrial and commercial development. It is located near the site of his former factory, marked by a preserved chimney, the first factory chimney in Kuopio, erected in 1875. Visiting the memorial offers a glimpse into the life and work of a man who left a lasting impact on the city. Today, Ranin's legacy continues through companies like Lignell & Piispanen, a beverage company that traces its roots back to Ranin's distillery and the pharmacists who created the company's original liqueurs.
