Discover more about Kasarmipuisto

Kasarmipuisto, situated in Kuopio's historically significant barracks district, offers a serene retreat distinguished by its rich array of trees and poignant war memorials. The park's grounds feature a diverse collection of trees, with a survey in the 1970s identifying around 30 different woody plant species. Dominating the landscape are spruces and larches surrounding the central area, complemented by birches, maples, red ash, Swiss pine, and various poplars, including aspen, white willow, rowan, and linden trees. Noteworthy specimens include a 15-meter fragrant poplar, a European larch standing 17 meters tall, an 11-meter cutleaf birch, and a towering 35-meter three-forked Berlin poplar. The park also serves as a historical site, commemorating Finland's wartime experiences. A memorial stone, erected in 1987 during the 70th anniversary of Finland's independence, honors the wars of 1939–1945. Additionally, a monument was erected in 1997, the 80th anniversary of Finland’s independence, to honor Kuopio's defense during the Winter War of 1939–40 and the Continuation War of 1941–44, featuring an anti-aircraft gun, a Bofors 40 ITK 38, and an accompanying memorial stone. The history of the barracks area dates back to the time of Swedish rule, with a captain's official residence of the Savonia and Savonlinna County Infantry Regiment's Kuopio company located there from 1718. In 1854, nine rifle battalions were established, with Kuopio hosting the 4th. The headquarters of the Kuopio rifle battalion and the 4th Kuopio company were stationed there until 1865 when the battalion was demobilized and later abolished in 1868 due to widespread famine. In the early 1880s, Kuopio, as a provincial capital, received the 5th Kuopio rifle battalion's wooden barracks buildings, which are still visible today. In the early 1900s, when the area was taken over by Russian troops, the red-brick barracks buildings that still stand were added. Today, the City of Kuopio is exploring new uses for the buildings, emphasizing preservation and renovation due to their cultural and historical significance, as well as climate objectives.
