Discover more about Snellman Park

Snellman Park, or Snellmaninpuisto in Finnish, is a cherished landmark in the heart of Kuopio. This 1.4-hectare park is the oldest in the city, offering a tranquil escape from the urban bustle. Its history dates back to the 1850s when the area transitioned from a market square to a green space. The park is named in honor of Johan Vilhelm Snellman (1806–1881), a Finnish statesman, journalist, and author who greatly influenced Finnish affairs during his time in Kuopio. A bust of Snellman, sculpted by Johannes Takanen, was unveiled in the park in 1886. Throughout the years, Snellman Park has been a focal point for community gatherings, summer concerts, and winter activities. The park boasts a variety of tree species, some nearly a century old, including iron birches, maples, red ash, and oaks. In spring, ornamental apple trees bloom with white and red flowers, while summer brings vibrant floral arrangements and the park's iconic fountain from the 1950s. A renovation project in 2019–2020 revitalized the park's corridors, lighting, and vegetation. Snellman Park is surrounded by significant historical buildings, including the Kuopio Lutheran Cathedral, the former Bank of Finland, the Kuopio Museum, Snellman Primary School, and Kanttila, the former residence and business building of Minna Canth. Today, Snellman Park is part of the larger Kuopio National City Park, established in 2017. It remains a beloved space for relaxation, recreation, and community events.
