Discover more about Bonga Castle

Bonga Castle, an intriguing landmark in Loviisa, seamlessly combines architectural history with a vibrant art scene. The castle's story began in the early 1900s when a couple from St. Petersburg commissioned its construction. Designed initially by architect Th. Hjelt in the Art Nouveau style, the building's red-roofed towers were later transformed into a granite castle reflecting Italian neo-classicism and functionalism by architect Hilding Ekelund. In 1987, the estate was acquired by artist Riitta Nelimarkka and Jaakko Seeck. Today, the castle serves as both a home and a gallery, displaying nearly two hundred of Nelimarkka's works, including drawings, aquarelles, graphic art, collages, and more. The church-side wing functions as an atelier and production space, while the south side has been renovated into an art museum-gallery open to the public. Visitors can explore the castle's grounds and immerse themselves in Nelimarkka's colorful and imaginative art. The exhibitions offer a refreshing and joyful experience, with the artist's works also available for purchase in the gallery shop. Bonga Castle is more than just a museum; it's a living, breathing work of art that embodies the spirit of Loviisa.
