Discover more about Isopuisto

Isopuisto, meaning 'Great Park,' is the largest constructed park on Kotkansaari Island, encompassing approximately 8 hectares. Established around the Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas, completed in 1801, it holds the distinction of being Kotka's oldest building. The park's history dates back to the late 1700s when Grand Duke Konstantin laid the church's foundation stone and planted the first spruce trees, marking the beginning of Kotka's park development. Originally named Konstantininpuisto, the park has evolved into a cherished space for relaxation and reflection. Isopuisto is designed in the style of an English landscape park, characterized by its natural terrain, mature trees, and winding pathways. Adjacent to the church, a striking flowerbed showcases over 50 perennial species, along with thousands of spring bulbs and azaleas that bloom in early summer. The park has several statues and memorials, including a statue of A.S. Popov, who developed the radio transmitter used in Finland's first maritime rescue radio connection in 1900, a statue of Maria Purpur, who saved the church from destruction during the Crimean War, and a memorial to the local regiment JR 45. Throughout its history, Isopuisto has served as a focal point for the community. In the late 1800s, a fire station was built on the park's edge, which also functioned as Kotka's first theater. A kiosk and a bandstand were added in the 1890s, hosting summer concerts. The park was modernized in the 1960s with a mountain stream, playground, ball field, miniature golf course, and wading pool. Today, Isopuisto continues to host community events and seasonal activities, offering a welcoming atmosphere for visitors to immerse themselves in nature while remaining close to the city's amenities.
