Discover more about Kyminlinna

Kyminlinna, or 'the castle of Kymi,' is a five-cornered caponier fortress located on the island of Hovinsaari in Kotka. Constructed between 1791 and 1808, it was initially overseen by Alexander Suvorov and later by General Jan Pieter van Suchtelen. The fortress was part of a double fortification with the Ruotsinsalmi sea fortress, designed to defend against land-based attacks along the King's Road. Kyminlinna's strategic importance diminished after the Finnish War when the border moved. It saw its only battle during the Finnish Civil War in 1918. Throughout the 20th century, it served various purposes, including a refugee camp, prisoner-of-war camp, and a training area for the Finnish Defence Forces until 2005. Today, Kyminlinna is owned by Senate Properties and is open to the public. Visitors can explore the grounds, walk along the ramparts, and imagine the fortress's storied past. The site also hosts cultural events and exhibitions, offering an enriching experience for those interested in Finnish art and history. Although the buildings within the fortress are generally closed, the exterior and surrounding paths provide a unique blend of history and nature.
