Lapakisto Nature Reserve: A Finnish Wilderness Escape

Lapakisto Nature Reserve is a captivating natural area located in Nastola, near Lahti, Finland. This 230-hectare conservation area features a diverse landscape of lakes, rocky cliffs, and small mires, providing a quintessential Finnish wilderness experience. The reserve is known for its varied terrain and scenic beauty. Hiking trails wind through lush forests, leading to stunning viewpoints such as Pitkäjärvenvuori Hill, which rises 45 meters above Lake Pitkäjärvi. The trails, marked with different colors, cater to various skill levels, ensuring an enjoyable experience for all visitors. Five marked routes crisscross the area, totaling 23 km in length. One accessible route leads to a campfire site. Lapakisto is a haven for birdwatchers, with nearly 50 species identified in the area. The reserve's diverse habitats support various bird species, including the endangered willow tit and crested tit. Other notable species include the wood grouse, hazel grouse, western capercaillie, osprey, nightjar, grey-headed woodpecker, black woodpecker and red-breasted flycatcher. The lakes and ponds within the reserve also host waterfowl. Visitors can enjoy various recreational activities, including hiking, nature photography, and picnicking. The reserve features several campfire sites and lean-to shelters, providing ideal spots for relaxation and enjoying the natural surroundings. In autumn, the reserve transforms into a vibrant display of red and gold foliage.
