Discover more about Miekankoski

Miekankoski is more than just a scenic spot; it's a journey through Finnish history and natural beauty. Located on the west side of Mäntyharju, the area is known for its stunning rapids and a rich history tied to log floating. The Miekankoski Museum of Log Floating provides insight into the region's past, showcasing the importance of waterways in Finland's development. The museum is housed in renovated log drivers' buildings, including a hut, workshop, and warehouse. These buildings now also host a summer café and a handicrafts shop selling local products. Admission to the museum is free during the café's opening hours. Historically, Miekankoski was also significant as the border between Sweden and Russia, marked by a monument near the bridge commemorating the Treaty of Turku. In 1910, a shortcut from Lake Saimaa to the Mäntyharju water system was built, making Miekankoski a vital junction for waterways until 1975 when log floating ended. Today, Miekankoski is a popular destination for fishing, with opportunities to catch whitefish and trout. Fishing permits are available at the café. Visitors can also rent kayaks and canoes to explore nearby lakes and even access the Repovesi National Park via a canoeing route. The area is easily accessible by car, bicycle, or boat, with a small car park available.
